As part of the „Micii Artiști. On Stage and in Life” project, we continued children's educational journey with module 4, dedicated to development through music, authentic expression and discovering one's inner voice.

On May 3, at Școala Gimnazială nr. 13 in Timișoara, we began the music and personal development workshops, led by artist and facilitator Walter Ghicolescu. Over the course of a week, more than 50 children took part in interactive activities on rhythm, diction, breathing, coordination and stage performance.

The project supports children's development through non-formal artistic education methods, contributing to greater self-confidence, expressiveness and emotional intelligence.

The workshops started from an essential idea: every child has a voice worth hearing. Beyond musical technique, the experience was about the courage to express oneself freely, to be seen and to be heard.

An educational initiative carried out with the support of City of Mara, in partnership with Fundația Alber.

Music education and authentic expression for children

Not all children have the courage to make their voice heard. That's why music education through non-formal methods becomes an essential tool in building self-confidence and personal expressiveness.

The music module was built around the idea of exploration, emotional safety and free expression. Through music, children learned to listen to one another, collaborate, find their rhythm and create harmony as a group.

Over the 5 days, the workshops led by Walter Ghicolescu offered a space where children could experiment without fear, make mistakes without pressure, and discover that their voice matters, no matter their level of experience.

What were the music workshops like?

The music education workshops brought together more than 50 children in a creative, safe and interactive space, dedicated to discovering their voice and personal development through art. The activities were designed to support the development of expressiveness and self-confidence through hands-on musical experiences:

• rhythm, coordination and breathing exercises, designed to develop attention and vocal control
• diction and performance activities, through which children learned to clearly express their emotions and ideas
• teamwork moments, in which they discovered the importance of harmony and listening to one another
• creative activities coordinated by artist Walter Ghicolescu, which encouraged courage and self-confidence

Throughout the workshops, children understood that music isn't just technique, but also emotion, presence and connection with the world around them.

The module's final moment: a recital dedicated to the community

The goal of this module went beyond the school's educational setting, extending the learning process into the community. At the end of the week, together with Walter Ghicolescu, children from Școala Gimnazială nr. 13 gave a musical recital at Căminul pentru Persoane Vârstnice „Inocențiu M. Klein” in Timișoara. For an audience of seniors, the event brought an authentic encounter with the children's energy and sensitivity. For some of the students, this experience was their first opportunity to be on stage, a defining moment of artistic expression, emotion and self-assurance. In this context, music became a common language between generations, turning what they'd learned in the workshops into a gesture of connection, empathy and real contribution to community life.

What did the musical experience mean for children

For the children, the music workshops meant more than artistic education. Through musical exercises and group activities, they discovered that every voice matters and that together they can create harmony, even when they're different from one another.

It was a process of personal discovery, in which they learned to manage their emotions, be patient and build confidence in their own abilities.

Why does music education matter for children?

Music education contributes significantly to children's emotional, social and cognitive development. Through artistic activities, children develop their self-confidence and ability to express themselves.

Through projects like this, children benefit from:

• building self-confidence
• improving communication and listening skills
• developing coordination, rhythm and attention as a team
• stimulating creativity and emotional intelligence
• non-formal learning experiences through art

Impact

The music education module demonstrated how important a safe space for expression is for children's development. Through the workshops led by Walter, children discovered that music can become a tool for trust, communication and connection. The final recital turned their learning into a gesture of giving back to the community.

Over the course of nearly three months, 140 students took part in emotional education workshops through art, cultural experiences and career guidance activities, designed to contribute to well-rounded development and help each child discover their potential.
